Russ Barenberg - The Grammy Award Winning Guitarist from Nashville Gears up for Exclusive Shows in South Africa

‘The Nashville native Russ Barenberg is one of the best Acoustic guitar players in the world today. With a career spanning over four decades, five solo albums and a fifteen year residency as the house band guitarist for the BBC show, the Trans Atlantic sessions. Russ has long been at the forefront of the acoustic music scene, pushing the boundaries with experimental improvisation and crossing the cultural borders, by fusing styles such as Bluegrass, Calypso, Celtic and Jazz. All of the above makes Russ one of the greatest composers and players, but his genuine strength lies in his sense of melody. Russ’ songs truly transport you to a magical realm, where the authentic voice of roots and acoustic dance music still thrives.’

Grammy nominated acoustic guitarist and composer Russ Barenberg is known for his
melodic playing, beautiful tone and memorable instrumental compositions. Long at the
creative forefront of the acoustic music scene, he has collaborated with many of its finest
artists, including Alison Krauss, James Taylor, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck,
Emmy Lou Harris, Maura O’Connell, Jesse Winchester and Tim O’Brien. Russ’s most
recent album, When at Last, adds to an “exquisitely original” body of work with
more vibrant new melodies and rich ensemble arrangements. The record earned
Russ a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance and was
nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association Instrumental Album
of the Year. The album is described well by Nashville writer, Jon Weisberger:
“…while ensemble interplay is the foundation of When at Last, its heart and soul
ultimately is to be found in Barenberg’s tunes…and in his glistening playing. Few
guitarists so perfectly blend a mastery of roots music traditions with melodic originality,
or so finely balance muscularity with delicacy, and each moment of the album is shaped
by these artistic dualities…”

Skip, Hop & Wobble, the award-winning 1993 release by Russ’s long-time trio with
Dobro master Jerry Douglas and acoustic bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, influenced an entire
generation of musicians. Russ has also recorded with legendary jazz bassist, Charlie
Haden and with actor and Grammy-winning banjo player, Steve Martin. His playing has
graced numerous film soundtracks, most notably Ken Burns’ documentary, The Civil
War and the 2010 release, Get Low, starring Robert Duvall and Bill Murray. Since
1995, he has been a member of the house band as well as a featured performer on
the acclaimed BBC television programs, The Transatlantic Sessions. Produced and
filmed in Scotland, the programs feature collaborative performances by top
musicians from America and the British Isles.

South African shows include Durban & KZN, Gauteng & Cape Town with guest performances & collaborations with Hinds Brothers Band, Richard Haslop & Wiam Otto to name a few.
